We decided we wanted to have another crack at the season ending Birkett 6 hour relay!
This race, which was first run in 1951 is named after one of the 750 Motor Club’s founder members Holland ‘Holly’ Birkett who came up with the idea for an endurance race with a difference, instead of one car and changing drivers you enter a several cars that run as a relay team.
Our entry was:
Bluebell – Drivers, Matt Domin and Paul Watson
Porsche 924S – Drivers, Adam Rowlandson and Paul Hill
BMW 318is – Drivers, Michael Wright and Liam Wright
We had met Michael and Liam while racing the Porsche in the Future Classics and they seemed like a good couple of chaps to have along!
We planned to do 45 minute stints each driver with the next driver due out ready and waiting in the car in case of problems. The weather was pretty terrible which made it a bit more difficult, especially for those drivers who were not so familiar with the GP circuits layout. It is also a feature of this race that you have a wide variety of cars taking part, some much quicker than others, with the finishing positions decide using a complex (to us anyway) handicap system.
It didn’t all go totally according to plan, Adam found a gravel trap in the Porsche, Matt got taken out by a spinning BMW after a safety car restart and Liam had to dive into the pits when his wiper arm fell off in teeming rain! But the main thing was that we finished as a team and had a good time!
Massive thanks to Paige for being an outstanding team manager and to the whole team for getting us there and keeping us going!
